Microschool vs Homeschool
Both models put the child first. The difference is who teaches, where school happens, and how much of the day is on the parent. Here's how to think about it.
A microschool is a small, guide-led K–5 (or beyond) learning community — typically under ten students — that meets daily outside the home. Homeschool is parent-led education, usually inside the home, with the parent choosing curriculum and pacing.
Many Miami families consider both. Microschools are often the right fit when parents want personalized education but cannot (or do not want to) be the primary teacher five days a week.
Side-by-side
| Microschool (OOTWA) | Homeschool | |
|---|---|---|
| Who teaches | A trained guide, daily | A parent (or co-op) |
| Where it meets | Dedicated learning space in Miami | In the home (with occasional outings) |
| Class size | Under 10 students, mixed-age | 1 family |
| Social environment | Daily peer learning and collaboration | Mostly siblings and scheduled meetups |
| Curriculum | Mastery-based, Powered by Prenda | Family-selected; varies |
| Parent time per day | Drop-off / pick-up + evenings | Several hours of direct teaching |
| Florida FES-EO eligibility | Yes — applied to tuition | Yes — applied to approved expenses |
| Annual cost | $9,894 (often less with FES-EO) | Varies widely; curriculum + materials |
| Best for | Parents who want personalization without becoming the teacher | Parents who want maximum control over content and schedule |
When a microschool is the better fit
- You want individualized learning but you (and/or your co-parent) work full-time.
- Your child needs daily social experience with peers.
- You want professional teaching support without the bureaucracy of a 600-student private school.
- You qualify for FES-EO and want a school environment that accepts it.
When homeschool is the better fit
- You want maximum control over content, schedule, and religious/values content.
- You have the bandwidth to teach multiple subjects across grade levels.
- Your family travels frequently or your schedule does not align with a school day.
